VISIT THE MANIALTEPEC LAGOON
Birdwatching: We'd recommend going with Hidden Voyages Ecotours. The guides are very knowledgable on the many bird species in the area.
Bioluminescence: A must see. The waters of Manialtepec are home to bioluminescent phytoplankton at certain times of the year. At night the water will glow as you swim around in it.
Paddleboard Tour: Ask us for more information on tours of the Lagoon.
Go Fishing
Surf and Fishing Charters: Levi is our favorite deep sea fishing captain in Puerto Escondido. Catch and release or catch to eat Marlin, mahi mahi, sailfish and more. If you're lucky you could see dolphins, manta rays, or whales but you're always guaranteed to see a few turtles. Levi 954.100.9263, or contact him through his Facebook Page.
Speaking of Turtles
Escobilla Turtle Sanctuary: About a 40 minute drive from Puerto you'll find one of the most important nesting sites in the world for the Olive Ridely sea turtle. The major arribadas ("arrival" or mass nestings) occur mostly during August and September, where you'll see thousands of mama turtles on the beach laying their eggs. The arribadas occur between June and December (2 to 3 evenings after a full moon) and 45 days after the nesting you can see baby turtles hatching. Arrange a tour through one of the guides in town.
National Mexican Turtle Center: Mexican waters are home to 6 out of the 7 sea turtle species. (4 can be foud on the Oaxacan coast). This small aquarium and research center was set up to provide education and conservation of turtles. Fresh water and land turtles also are exhibited. About an hour from Puerto in the funky village of Mazunte, it makes for a great day trip.
