OUR HISTORY

In a little corner of La Punta de Zicatela, you can find Puerto Escondido’s largest Surf Shop Factory, Odyboards. Inside it you will discover local shaper, Ody Ordaz, busy at work with a planer in hand, powdered from head to toe with foam and fiberglass dust, doing what he loves best, making surfboards.

In the early nineties he was a kid with a beat up board, surfing the local breaks and repairing his own boards lovingly. A few years later he was sweeping floors of Otra Mas, the best ding repair shop in town. His boss, Miguel Ramirez, gave him a chance to sand a few dings, and seeing his talent and love for the craft, he soon took the broom away from Ody and handed him a sander and he was on his way, fixing everything from fin cuts to broken boards.

A year later Ody could be found stripping old boards of their fiberglass, to reshape and glass them into his own creations. Ody became National Champion in the Longboard division two years running, winning 9th place in Brazil at the ISA World Surfing Games in 2000 riding his own shape. For 8 years Ody continued to work in the surf industry in Mexico, but since it was so difficult to get his hands on new materials, he headed to California where he could perfect his craft. For the first half year Ody worked with Schneider Surfboards, glassing, sanding and polishing, while keeping up with his own ding repair business and personal shapes in his spare time.

Ody’s clients, noticing his enthusiasm and eye for detail, began ordering more and more boards from Ody. He also began working with Adrian Nichols of Phase One Surfboards, and soon word got out that Ody is both creative and strives for quality. Ody realized it was time to dedicate the majority of his time to his hand shapes, so he rented a shaping bay and glassing room from Epoxy Pro where he also worked part time. During that time Ody was fortunate to live across the street from Hawaiian Pro Designs. The late shaping legend, Donald Takayama, was kind enough to let Ody hang out and pick up pointers in his shaping bay. Ody spent three more years in California refining his expertise of creating high quality, hand crafted Odyboards.

In 2005 Ody moved back to the paradise that we call Puerto Escondido where he continues to build world class surfboards. Visit his fully stocked surf shop where you’ll find a variety of shortboards, fish, funboards, longboards & paddleboards. Just follow the highway from Puerto towards Huatulco, and take the third entrance to La Punta. Odyboards Odyboards Factory & Surf Shop can be found on Google Maps. We’re located just off the highway next to the Casa de Salud in Brisas de Zicatela.
